Deceptive Dishes & Snacks
Do you often find yourself eating something and then after the fact looking at the nutrition label just to see how many calories you just ate? Only to find out that it is super high in calories, fat, and/or sodium……Lately, I have noticed that fast food restaurants, diners, coffee shops, and pre-packaged grocery items are trying to make their foods appear healthy. These companies/restaurants are tricking us all!
Here are some foods that can be tricky & what to opt for instead:
Zucchini Walnut Muffin from Starbucks has 490 calories & 28g fat————choose the Perfect Oatmeal for 140 calories and 2.5 grams of fat and add in 1/2 of the dried fruit pack for an additional 50 calories and 1/2 of the nut medley pack for 50 calories.
Apple Bran Muffin from Starbucks has 350 calories and 9g of fat————-choose Spinach, Roasted tomato, Feta & egg white wrap for 280 calories and 10g of fat.
Roast Turkey & Swiss Sandwich from Arby’s has 710 calories and 28 g of fat———choose Roast Chicken sandwich for 370 calories and 12 g of fat.
Grilled chicken on the Barbie from Outback has 400 calories and 8g of fat———choose Victoria’s Filet 6 oz for 218 calories and 9g of fat. Pair either one with grilled asparagus.
SubWay 6 in tuna melt has 470 calories and 24g of fat——–choose any of the sandwiches under 6 grams of fat and hold the mayo & dressings & cheese calories run from 230-380.
Chicken and shrimp Carbonara from Olive Garden has 1440 calories and 88g of fat!!!——-choose Venetian Apricot Chicken for 400 calories and 7g of fat.
Baja Salad (full size) from Wendys has 730 calories and 47g of fat——-choose Berry Almond Chicken salad for 450 calories and 16g fat.
Avocado Burger on wheat from Chili’s has a WHOPPING 1,570 calories and 90g of fat (if you think that has a lot of fat/calories, check out the other burgers)——-choose (anything else!) Grilled chicken sandwich w steamed broccoli has 610 calories with 13g of fat.
I am even guilty of this now and again and now my LESSON is learned. If I have to eat out at a fast food/chain restaurant, I check online under the nutrition page for the “healthier” options.
While grocery shopping, I read labels to make sure my foods do not include enriched bleach flour, high fructose corn syrup (which is pretty hard to find foods without this these days), monosodium glutimate (MSG, in a TON of foods), and other additives like artificial sweeteners.
Get smart. Check the internet or brochures before stuffing your face. You will probably be shocked!
