Fried Chicken for Breakfast? Hmmm…..
As I was traveling home last week from New Orleans for the NATA (national athletic trainer association conference), I happened to be sitting next to a couple who thought fried chicken was appropriate for breakfast. Not only is fried chicken (sucking on the bones and all) disgusting to me, but it is even more disgusting at 9:30 am on an airplane with absolutely no circulation. AND…..I forgot to mention that they both had a biscuit, huge serving of french fries, and a large coke. I went to the Popeyes website and added up the amount of calories and fat that each of these individuals consumed for breakfast. It was a whopping 2,140 calories (which is more than I eat in an entire day!!!!) and 113 grams of fat (which is about 3 days worth of fat for me). Don’t forget, that was for EACH person!!! I could not believe this and I don’t think people realize how bad fast food can really be for them.
If you have lung cancer, would you continue to smoke? Well, if you are obese or have diabetes, why would you continue to consume these high fat/calorie foods? It is a question that I am sure I will be asking for the rest of my life. Why do people do that to themselves? It is so unhealthy and makes you feel miserable for the rest of the day. Make healthy choices daily. If you start your day with healthy options, it helps you to make those same healthy choices throughout the day. Instead of going for the Popeyes fried chicken or the enourmously large cinnabun, try things like oatmeal with brown sugar and dried fruit and nuts from Starbucks or the yogurt and granola parfait from McDonalds. Trust me……I know it is not easy to eat healthy while traveling, but it can be done. More and more fast food joints are making an effort to give a healthy option. I know I can get something “healthier” at every fast food restaurant that I have been to (with the exception of Zaxby’s……and I don’t go there).
Here are some more healthy breakfast options at fast food restaurants common in airports and every day America:
Dunkin Donuts: Eggwhite turkey sausage flatbread sandwich with a coffee- approx. 280-300 calories (DD has a DD Smart logo on all of their “healthier” options)
Starbucks: Reduced-Fat Turkey Bacon with Egg Whites on english muffin with non fat/no whip tall mocha- approx 420 calories OR a 16 oz Chocolate Vivanno smoothie (270 calories
McDonalds: Fruit and Yogurt Parfait (160 calories) and an Egg McMuffin (300 calories, take off the cheese and you save 50 calories)
Burger King: Egg & cheese crossanwich (320 calories)
Chick fil a: Yogurt Parfait with granola (290 calories)
