Roller coasters, ferris wheels, & FAIR foods
Fried oreos, fried kool aid, fried coke, fried bananas, fried corn dogs, fried dough, fried snickers, fried mac n cheese, fried twinkies, fried cookie dough, fried pickles, fried avocado, and the list goes on and on. What do all of these foods have in common? (besides foods that my husband wishes he could eat every day of the year) Foods you can get at the fair and Yes, a major artery clogger!
First of all, in my opinion, these foods just sound disgusting. However, I know that many of you like to induldge in these one-time-a-year fried foods. BUT……how do they make you feel after you’ve eaten these greasy foods and then ride a roller coaster. Sick? Instead of eating the really unhealthy fair foods and regretting it when you get home, learn how to swap these foods for something a little healthier (notice, I didn’t necessarily say healthy, but I said healthier) with these Fair Foods recipes you can make from home. And if you HAVE to eat at the fair, opt for these “healthier” choices:
- peanuts
- pickles on a stick
- chocolate dipped banana
- corn on the cob
- cotton candy
- shaved ice
- soft serve yogurt
- candy apple
**although some high in sugar, fairly low in fat and calories……comparatively**
Candy Apples:
Ingredients:
- 7 apples
- 1 cup white sugar
- 1/2 cup light corn syrup
- 3/4 cups water
- 4-5 drops red food coloring
Prep:
Lightly grease cookie sheets. Insert craft sticks into whole, stemmed apples. In a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, combine sugar, corn syrup and water. Heat to 300 to 310 F or until a small amount of syrup dropped into cold water forms hard, brittle threads. Remove from heat and stir in food coloring. Holding apple by its stick, dip in syrup and remove and turn to coat evenly. Place on prepared sheets to harden.
Chocolate Dipped Bananas (frozen):
Ingredients:
- lollipop sticks
- gallon size plastic zip-loc bags
- wax paper
- ripe but firm bananas
- 12 oz. bag of chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup coconut oil (found at EarthFare/Whole Foods)
Prep:
Cut bananas in half and peel, then gently put the lollipop stick up into the cut half of the banana. Leave enough of the stick sticking out so when dipped and eaten you can hold onto the stick comfortably. Put the bananas carefully into a gallon size zip-loc bag. Close bag and put into the freezer until frozen solid 6-8 hours or over night. Melt chocolate chips and coconut oil together in the microwave oven on half power for 2 minutes stirring every 30 seconds until melted and there are no lumps. The chocolate mixture will be runny.
Pour chocolate into a jar or tall drinking glass to dip the bananas. I measured my banana halves to see how tall I needed my glass to be. I originally tried to dip the bananas in the bowl I used to melt the ingredients together but it really didn’t work out to well. Using a jar is perfect because you just put your banana in and swirl it around. Take banana directly from freezer zip-lock bag by the stick, put into jar with chocolate mixture, swirl in the chocolate so its evenly coated. Take out of jar and hold low to counter top over wax paper and quickly sprinkle desired toppings on, turning to coat evenly. Recipe from: http://www.you-made-that.com/chocolate-dipped-frozen-bananas/
