The Dreaded New Years Resolution
Do you always feel obligated to make a new years resolution and then feel like a failure when you never stick to it? Well, 9 out of 10 people will not keep their new year resolutions and one third of people who make one will not make it to February. Make this the year where you make yourself proud and actually stick to that dreaded new years resolution.
Instead of making broad range resolutions like go to the gym more often, get out of debt, spend more time with the family, eat better, and give up bad habits; make more specific resolutions. Don’t set yourself up for failure but make your resolutions practical so that you can make them a lifestyle change, one you can continue on into years to come.
Here are some of the top resolutions that you are guaranteed to stick with:
1. Set a specific fitness goal for yourself. Run a 5k, half marathon, or full marathon. Go hiking or mountain biking once a week.
2. Be Active. The gym can be very boring at times. So, instead of setting a goal of going to the gym, make it a habit to do something active at least 3 times a week (biking, kayaking, running, walking with a friend, canoeing, rock climbing, sailing, skiing, snowboarding, cross country skiing, and the list goes on……)
3. Try new recipes and Cook. Instead of vowing to eat a healthy diet. Make your diet specific like eating 2-3 fruits a day or 5 servings of vegetables a day. If you cook your meals for yourself, you know exactly what you are getting out of your diet. You can also set goals like cutting out soft drinks or fast food….for good.
4. Stress less. Have date night with your significant other to help take your mind off work and other stressful things in your life. Date nights do not have to be expensive. They can be as fun as making something together or getting out of the house for a run together.
5. Play with your kids or pets. Do fun things like field day. It gets your blood pumping and you get to spend time with loved ones.
6. Get Organized. Create one list at the beginning of the week and add to it as you need to.
Don’t make too many resolutions because you are unlikely to stick to all of them. It is better to make one and stick with that one the whole year. Trust me….you’ll thank yourself in the end!
