Healthy Eats at the Airport
Do you want your butt to look like this? I know I sure don’t and that is why I make it a point to eat healthy, exercise daily, and get plenty of rest. I am going to give you some tips on how choose healthy options while traveling in an airport. So many of us travel by plane these days and we often get stuck in airports when we least expect it. Follow some of my tips to look and feel great!
I often pay attention to what people are eating around me in airports. I don’t know why I do it or why I even care but I guess it is partly out of boredom and partly because I want to help these people. I can’t really help it, but I notice when someone is eating a huge turkey leg or oversized slice of pepperoni pizza at 8 am. I just wish someone would tell these people to eat something with a little more substance, less saturated fat and they would feel better and be more satisfied throughout their long layover or flight. Eating a meal or snack at the airport does not have to be unhealthy. I am going to give you a few ideas of how you can eat healthy at the airport while waiting for your next flight whether you have 10 minutes to grab something and run or 10 hours because your flight has been delayed or cancelled.
So many times I see people eating the nastiest foods at all hours of the day in the airport. I see people eating pizza, burgers, fried chicken, ice cream, incredibly large cinnamon rolls, and other fat and sugar-laden foods at 7,8, and 9 in the MORNING! People……stop and think about this. You are starting your day off with empty calories that will just ruin the rest of your day. If you don’t have a lot of time in between flights, try stopping at one of those little kiosk and grabbing a piece of fruit, tomato juice, and some type of low calorie/low fat protein bar or a yogurt. These aren’t always super low in sugar, but they are a great alternative to a Snickers and coke! If you do have a little bit of extra time and can wait in line, try going to places like Dunkin Donuts, Starbucks, Subway, and Quiznos. These places all have healthier options to choose from. Instead of going for the cream filled donuts and iced frap at Dunkin Donuts, try their egg white flat bread sandwiches with turkey bacon and a coffee. If you are a Starbucks girl, go for the oatmeal and a tall skinny mocha without the whip. If you are around for lunch, try the grilled chicken sandwich with a side salad from McDonald or a cup of chili and a small baked potato from Wendy’s. Fast food restaurants are starting to catch on to the health trend. They may still sell more burgers and fries than the healthier options, but at least you know the healthy options are available. AND….if you are craving a fast food burger and fries, try ordering off of the kids menu. After all, those are the portion sizes that we used to have as adults back in the early 90s.
Remember to stay hydrated with water before and during your flight. You may not realize it, but airplanes can cause you to suffer from dehydration…..especially on long flights. An airline cabin is usually much dryer than what you are used to. Dehydration can mean that you will not only feel thirsty, but you can also get a bloody nose, bloodshot eyes, and dry/itchy skin. So pack a bottle on water in your bag before hopping on that plane.
