SUP Beach
Stand Up Paddleboarding is the new craze for exercising on the beach in the water. It is a fast growing sport that many different people are turning to for a little exercise and fun in the sun. Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) is for everyone so grab your friends, family, enemies, or just anyone!! I’ve seen pregnant women doing it, older men and women, children, yogis, and even meatheads! It offers an amazing total body workout that many atheletes (such as skiers, snowboarders, and yoga guru’s) are turning to for the cross training.
Not much is needed for paddle boarding which is why it is such a nice sport. You will need a board (shaped like a very long, round surfboard) and a paddle and a life jacket. Don’t live in Charleston or on the coast? Don’t fret my friends……you can paddle anything from lakes to rivers to inlets to oceans. Waves or no waves. SUP requires you have a little bit of balance but once you get your center of gravity, it becomes very natural and easy to maneuver around the water. You can make your workout more difficult by doing yoga or pilates poses on top of the board while in the water. Yes, you heard me right………while standing on your board IN THE WATER! This is not as easy to learn and pick up, but once you practice, practice, practice (just with any sport), you will become better at it.
Here are a few tips from the paddle boarding experts:
- Your feet should be parallel, about hip-width distance apart, centered between the rails (board edges). Don’t stand on the rails.
- Keep toes pointed forward, knees bent and your back straight.
- Balance with your hips—not your head. But make sure you’re looking ahead.
- Keep head and shoulders steady and upright, and shift your weight by moving your hips, not the rest of your body.
- Do not stare at your feet or the water on either side of your board. Your gaze should be level at the horizon.
Don’t forget your sunscreen and shades and fun, adventurous attitude!!!! Have fun trying something new! I am 5 months preggo now and my belly is starting to grow more and more every single day. SUP is something that is great for me because it is not only relaxing, but it gives me a great core and upper body workout and is something different from my running, walking, and spinning. When you are pregnant, your core is very hard to train (which is why a lot of women get lower back pain) and SUP offers a great core workout. I know I love it!
